Sigma 85mm/1.4 EX DG HSM Review – Part 2: Real World Shooting – – Long Island Photographer

It’s been a while, but after spending a little more time with this Sigma 85mm/1.4, I figured it’s time to finish up the review. By finish, I mean this is more of a follow-up to Part 1 of this review than anything else. I’m not going to do the whole point-by-point test thing all over again. For one, not much has changed since the initial review. Secondly, I’ve been very busy grilling, biking, and hanging out with the best clients on the planet! Did I mention grilling? Yeah, I LOVE grilling!

Now, if you read Part 1 of the review (check it out if you haven’t), then you already know scientific tests are not what I do. I’m all about real world shooting. You know…..Real People. Real Moments. Real Love. Yeah, that’s what I’m about. After spending some 9+ months with the Sigma 85, I can honestly say that I’m still very much in love with this lens. Although I no longer bring it to bed with me at night (wifey was having none of that!), it still has a special place in my heart. Being banished to the lens bag at night (with the rest of my lenses) hasn’t stopped the 85/1.4 from performing flawlessly. I’ve used it for weddings, portraits, commercial shoots, and some personal shooting. It even made a trip to Germany back in April. It has held up to rigors of travel and professional shooting by continuing to perform like a champ.

I don’t know what else to say about this lens. I certainly can’t come up with any negatives. I guess you could complain about the weight, but I’m too much of a man’s man to do that. Focus has been quick and accurate, the HSM has been reliable and quiet, and the IQ has been amazing. I switch lenses a lot and they get banged around a bit during the course of a 10 hour wedding, but the build quality really shows. The glass and body have held up really well. I could snap a few pics of the lens, but it looks exactly as it did in Part 1. So if there are any concerns regarding the durability of Sigma’s new finish, you can rest easy.

Anyway, I know what you’re here for…..the free ice cream, right? Well, we ran out of ice cream, but I did manage to put together a mini collection of some of my favorite images taken with this lens. Hopefully this will give you more of an idea of how Sigma’s 85mm/f1.4 EX DG HSM performs in the wild.

Thanks for the review, very helpful indeed and wonderful shots. Just 1 question, how is this lens performing when shooting against strong backlit? Does it focus well?

I am seriously considering this lens .But looking at the colour seems to be shifting to warm and green tint side.
