It’s been a little hectic around here to say the least!
It seems like there’s never enough time in the day to get everything done. We ‘ve been working on a gazillion things at once and we’re just getting to the point of having some normalcy back in our lives.
So, what have we been up to you ask?
Hmmmmm………where do we start?
1. In the last month, we’ve made some pretty drastic equipment changes. We’ve switched from our Pentax system over to a Canon system. Why? Because we felt the change would allow us to serve our clients better. The availability and support system of Canon has been nothing short of amazing. We photographers tend to live our lives according to Murphy’s Law:
“What can go wrong, will go wrong…..and at the worst possible time.”
Thus, we live in a constant state of paranoia in regards to our equipment. While nothing has ever gone wrong from an equipment standpoint, the possibility is always there….and yeah, I’m a little paranoid about that. A smart photographer will not only have backup equipment, he’ll also have backups for the backup equipment. This is something we’ve always done and will continue to do. I’ve read nightmare stories about photographers meeting Murphy’s Law head on. It’s not a pretty thing. So, in an effort to serve our clients better we decided to make the change.
Simple answer: Availability. Not only the availability to purchase equipment, but the ability to rent compatible equipment if something does go wrong. Obviously this wouldn’t help us if we break a camera or drop a flash in the middle of a reception (that’s what the backups are for). But, if something were to go wrong or break the night before or the morning of your big day, we could always run down to our local shop and rent/buy whatever it is we need to get us through the day. If we happen to be traveling to a destination wedding and needed something in a pinch, it could be done a lot more easily with Canon than just about any other brand. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a knock on Pentax. I really like what we were able to do using Pentax. The issue was not with the equipment itself as much as it was the availability of the equipment. Pentax just doesn’t have the same support among dealers and camera shop, which is unfortunate because they make some really good stuff. I’m going to miss it.
(just to let you in on a secret, I still have some Pentax film cameras and lenses, so I haven’t completely left)
So, how will all of this affect you? On the surface, not at all. Will you notice it in the images? Probably not. If you do, it’s probably your imagination. As they say in golf, “It’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian.”, meaning the equipment itself is a big piece of the puzzle, but knowing how to use that equipment is far more important. Knowing that we have this kind of support from a manufacturer in terms of availability gives us peace of mind and allows us to capture your day without worry.
The downside to this change is that I had to learn the new equipment…..how it works, what all those buttons do, how to make changes on the fly without having to look it up in the manual (not that I read the manuals to begin with, but you get the point). So I took some time off so that I could become as proficient with the new stuff as I was with the old stuff. We’ve recently started shooting again and all is well on the equipment front. I’m sure I’ve bored you enough with the geeky camera technobabble anyway….
2. Since we didn’t have an shoots scheduled, we had more time to work on making things better for you. As was mentioned last month, we’ve been working on some exciting new product offerings for our customers. We’re really excited about some of the items we’ve got lined up for you. We think you’re really going to love these new products as well. We’re all about keeping things clean and simple and that applies to the products and services we offer. Don’t expect to be bombarded with tons of new items. We’ve selected just a few really nice products that will make for tasteful additions to our ever growing product line. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be revealing these new products and hopefully you’ll see why we’re so excited about them.
That’s it for now. I’ll try not to go so long without an update. Anyone that knows me also knows that I’m not lacking when it comes to talking (or writing) about anything. I’ll make sure we keep you abreast of what’s going on with Alan Abrams Photography.
