So Rebecca is getting ready for college…..a big step step in a girls life. It’s also a big step in any parent’s life, sending their child off into the cold, cruel world. This is a time when all parents have concerns about their child’s future.
My main concern? Packing for school? Nope.
Making sure she has everything she needs to survive in the world. Nope.
College loans and tuition bills? Nope.
You know what I’m concerned about. My main concern is squeezing this last month of photos out of her before we ship her off to school. Who says I don’t have my priorities in order?
You see, Becca is my favorite model.
Not because she sits there patiently while I snap away…..she doesn’t.
Not because she jumps at the chance to get her picture taken at the mere mention of it….she doesn’t do that either.
It’s because I love taking pictures of her.
When she cooperates (which isn’t very often), she is a wonderful model. Very pretty and extremely photogenic. (she’s gonna kill me when she sees this).
Anyway, we’re outside the other day. I’m practicing for an upcoming photo session by playing around with some off-camera lighting. I set everything up and point the camera at her. She turns away.
I wait. (we play this game ALL the time)
Finally, she gives up and lets me snap a few shots. Nothing special.
She looks away and I pounce! That’s when it happens…..and that’s why she’s my favorite model.

We’ve been lax in updating the blog these last few weeks. We’re growing at a fast rate and it’s been a little hectic on the business side of things. To make it even worse, I’ve been under the weather and haven’t been able to get out and do much. The good news is that I’m starting to feel a little better and should be back to my usual antics in no time at all.
One thing I like about having pets is that there’s always somebody to take photos of or test lighting technique on. Timbo, is my favorite subject because he just sits there and stares at you……especially when he’s hungry. That was the case today when I managed to grab a few shots of him. I’m actually starting to think he enjoys posing for the camera.

In my travels, one of the things I’ve always done is tell people that I’m from Harlem. I do this for no reason other than to show the pride I have for the place where I grew up. Another thing I’m proud of is the fact that I have a very close-knit group of childhood friends who are still my friends to this day. We grew up in a place called Schomburg Plaza, which is located at the northeast corner of Central Park on 110th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Since 1995, this group has gotten together on Father’s Day for a cookout in Morningside Park in West Harlem. We do this not only to reminisce about the “good old days”, but to celebrate our transition from childhood to fatherhood. Many of the fathers bring their kids and make them listen to us tell stories about how great we were and how tough life was back in the day. You know how the saying goes: “The older you get, the better you used to be.” This definitely describes us and it applies to just about everything we talk about, especially sports.
This year, one of our founding members, Melvin Smith, was honored with a proclamation from the New York State Senate. The proclamation was hand delivered by New York State Senator Bill Perkins, who also happens to be from Schomburg Plaza. In fact, his political career began there as a District Leader in Harlem, representing the neighborhood he lived in…..something he still does today.
